Sarah Mens: Ghana's First Female Pilot

Early Life and Education

Sarah Mens, born in 1947, was a Ghanaian trailblazer who became the first female pilot in her country. From a young age, she displayed a fascination with aviation, inspired by the sight of planes flying over her village. In 1964, she enrolled at the Ghana Air Force Training School, overcoming significant barriers and prejudice. Completing her training in 1968, she earned her pilot wings and became a Second Lieutenant.

Pioneering Career

After her graduation, Sarah Mens faced skepticism and doubt due to her gender. However, she persevered and proved her capabilities as a skilled pilot. She flew various aircraft, including the Fokker F27 and the Dornier Do 28, and served as a co-pilot on commercial flights. In 1972, she made history by becoming the first female captain of a commercial flight in Ghana.

Breaking Barriers

Sarah Mens's achievements did not come without challenges. As a woman in a male-dominated field, she faced discrimination and prejudice. Yet, she refused to be deterred, becoming a role model and an inspiration to aspiring aviators. She actively promoted aviation among young girls, encouraging them to pursue their dreams.

Legacy and Impact

Sarah Mens retired from the Ghana Air Force in 1994 with the rank of Squadron Leader. Her groundbreaking career paved the way for countless women in aviation, both in Ghana and beyond. She received numerous awards and accolades for her contributions, including the Order of the Volta, one of Ghana's highest honors. Sarah Mens passed away in 2015, leaving behind a legacy of courage, determination, and the belief that anything is possible.
